Frequently Asked Questions
Top Questions
Here are some of the most common questions we receive.
1. How does the singer rotation work?
The rotation is the order in which people are called to sing. The rotation order typically stays the same throughout the night, and we cycle through that order. This way, everyone gets a fair chance to sing. When you sign up, you are added to the end of the rotation by default.
We may adjust the rotation at the beginning of the show, temporarily to match similar styles of music, or in special cases such as somebody's birthday. However, we will do our best to keep the rotation fair for everyone.
2. What happens if I alternate between singing solo and with others?
Your turn in the rotation will be considered complete regardless of whether you sang solo or with others. Otherwise, you could essentially "double dip" and take more turns than others, which would be unfair to the rest of the singers.
3. What if I miss my turn?
If we call you to sing and you are not available, we will make an attempt or two to call you back up as the next singer. If you are still not available, we will move on to the next person in the rotation and you will be called when it's your turn in the rotation again. We (and the other singers) appreciate it if you are ready to sing when your turn comes up!
4. Do you accept tips? Will that affect my rotation position?
Yes, we do accept tips! However, tipping does not affect your rotation position. Everyone is placed in the rotation based on their sign-up time, and tips are appreciated but do not influence that order. Speaking of tips, don't forget to tip your bartenders!
5. Can I request a song that you don't have?
If you can't find your song out of our existing ~90,000 karaoke tracks, you can request a song that is not in our catalog by letting us know what song you're looking for. We will do our best to add it to our catalog, though we may not be able to add your song during the current show.
6. I hate technology. Do I have to use this website to sign up to sing?
We strongly prefer that you use the website to sign up, as it streamlines the process and makes it easier for us to manage the show. We also have iPad kiosks available for use at most venues if you do not want to use your own device. If you insist on using the old pencil-and-paper method, we carry sign-up cards as a backup. Ask us for some if you'd like to use them instead.
7. Can you come to a certain bar/venue? What about a private party?
We're happy to look into potential new venues! If you have a specific bar or venue in mind, please let us know. It would also help if you express your interest to the venue's management, as they may be more likely to contract with us if they know there's demand. And yes, we do private parties! Account FAQs
Song FAQs
We own a number of karaoke catalogs from various companies, and many popular songs are recorded by multiple companies. We attempt to group the same song together to reduce clutter in search results, which is indicated by multiple catalog badges next to the song title. In such cases, if you care about which version you sing, you can select your preferred version/catalog under "Advanced Options" when adding your song. You can also just leave it to the KJ to pick the best version for you!
In some cases, multiple individual song results may appear for the same song. This can happen if different catalogs have slightly different versions of the song, or if the spelling of the artist or title varies between catalogs. The biggest example is with the Karafun catalog, as we import their song data directly but do not modify it so it may not match other songs we physically own.
First off, note that you must be logged in to an account in order to use the Favorites and Song History features.
You can use the Favorites feature to save your preferred songs for easy access later. Simply click the heart icon next to a song title in the search results to add it to your Favorites list. To view and manage your Favorites, click on Your Favorites under the Songs section.
The Song History feature allows you to see a list of songs you've previously sung. This can be helpful for keeping track of your performances and finding songs you want to sing again. To view your song history, click on Your Song History under the Songs section.
All of the songs available on our platform are fully licensed for use in public karaoke performances. Some of our songs come from digital catalogs, and some songs come from physical karaoke discs (also known as CD+G discs). If you want to verify the licensing status of a specific song, click on the icon under the License column next to the song title in search results. We've painstakingly scanned every physical disc we own to prove our ownership of each song. Digital catalogs will display our current licensing information for each catalog. Sing with us (or hire us) with confidence that everything is on the up-and-up!
Yes, you can pick or avoid explicit or duet songs by looking for the appropriate labels in the song listings. Explicit songs will be marked with an Explicit label, and duet versions will be marked with a Duet label. Note that not all songs may have these labels, and we continue to work to update our catalog with this information.
Additionally, certain venues may have their own policies regarding explicit content, such as requiring all songs to be clean versions or only allowing explicit songs after a certain time. We will communicate this during a show if it applies. Our system may also hide explicit songs in these cases.
Etiquette FAQs
Karaoke is all about having fun and enjoying the music! Here are some basic etiquette tips to keep in mind:
- Absolutely no heckling or booing other singers! Everyone is here to have a good time. Support your fellow performers!
- Keep the noise level down while others are singing. Don't interrupt or talk loudly during a performance.
- Be respectful of the KJ's equipment. Do not swing the microphones around or drop them. Be careful around the screens and other equipment.
- If you need to leave the venue, let the KJ know so they can adjust the rotation accordingly.
- Tip your KJ and show appreciation for their work!
If you have been removed from the rotation and you signed up to sing using your own device, a notice will be shown at the top of the page with the reason for your removal. Normally, it's because we tried to call you and you weren't around for a long time. You can add yourself to the rotation again automatically in that case.
Note that you may also be removed from the rotation for the duration of the show if your behavior is disruptive or if you abuse our equipment, and you cannot add yourself to the rotation again without talking to the KJ.
If you have a problem with the KJ, please wait until they are not busy to discuss your issue. It may not be possible to discuss or resolve all issues during a show. Please be respectful and try to resolve the issue calmly. If you feel that your issue is not being addressed, you can contact us through our Contact Us page for further assistance.
Please note that Missoula Karaoke and/or the KJ is an independent contractor, and therefore they are not an employee of any given venue. As a result, the KJ has the final say in all performance-related decisions during a show.
